The Classic Face Mold was the first face mold created for the American Girl Doll line. Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly all were the first to use this face mold; it was first introduced in 1986.
Characteristics
The classic face mold has large eye sockets with corners at the bottom. The nose is thin and upturned. The lips are also thin, with two slightly gapped front teeth visible in between them. Classic mold dolls have a rounded chin and full cheeks. This doll most closely resembles a Caucasian background and thus has never been used on a dark-skinned doll; it has, however, been used on medium skinned dolls.
The first mold was designed by Götz. Mattel versions of the mold differ from pre-Mattel versions in that the lips and cheeks are more brightly painted.
This is the most prolific mold used by the company as of 2024.
