Coconut is a white Westie dog marketed as part of the My American Girl line of items. She has become something of a mascot for the line (along with Licorice from 2003 to 2008).

As a Just Like You Accessory

Coconut was released in 2000 and marketed as a boy. He came with a wicker dog bed with a blue polkadot cushion lining, pretend dog biscuits and a rawhide chew toy for $16.

The next year in 2001, Coconut was remarketed as a girl, and sold with a removable collar and leash only. She had been modified to have a magnet near the location of her mouth so that items could be "held" by her. The price of $16 remained the same. This was also the first year dress up sets were released for Coconut.

Licorice was released in 2003 and could share Coconut's clothing and accessories.

Coconut was given another rerelease in 2005. This bundle included a new collar and leash, magnetic tennis ball toy, and a certificate. Cost went up to $19.

Coconut was also available for purchase at bookstores.

From at least 2005 until 2008, it was possible to purchase a bundle that included a Just Like You doll and Coconut as an add-on. This was discontinued with the release of the Star Hoodie Outfit.

In 2009, Coconut was rereleased with a new collar, no leash, and no magnet to hold items. She also was paired up with new pets after Licorice was retired: Ginger, Sugar, and Honey. All four pets came with a collar and pet journal. Coconut's new collar is hot pink and orange, and the cost was increased to $22.

The price of Coconut was lowered back to $20 and pet journals were no longer bundled with each pet. Two new pets, Pepper and Praline, were released.

Two new pets, Chocolate Chip and Toasty, were released.

Sugar, Toasty, Ginger, and Praline were retired from the lineup. Chocolate Chip was bundled into the Service Dog Set and made unavailable as an independent purchase.

Licorice was given a rerelease and a redesign. One new pet, Meatloaf, was released. Prices for all Coconut pets were increased to $22.

Coconut was given a redesign with jointed limbs, no permanent collar, and the return of a magnet near the mouth area to hold items and a toy bone. All other named pets were retired with the exception of the dog in the Service Dog Set, and new, unnamed pets were released:

Dress-up sets for pets were also released, and older items were mostly retired. Prices for all Coconut pets were raised to $28.

See: List of Coconut-Style Items

Coconut has several accessory sets that include clothes and headgear to dress her in and play items. Many of these corresponded to various Just Like You outfits. Dress-up sets were retired in 2009 and Coconut was treated more like a pet than a second character.

In 2014, dress-up sets were made available for all newly-released Coconut pets.

Coconut sometimes came bundled at various bookstores with the book Coconut's Guide to Life. This version was originally not sold with a magnet and only with the collar; it now comes with the leash.

On Doll Clothing and Accessories

Coconut has had several modern outfits with her image. She is either prominent on a shirt or jacket or in the print of the fabric.

  • For a while, Coconut and her friends were given no gender specification so that the owner can decide on the gender of their pet. However, it can be assumed that the pets are females because Sugar, Coconut, and Honey have pink accents such as a collar or bow. Ginger and Praline have a purple collar. Chocolate Chip has an orange collar. Pepper, Toasty, and Meatloaf have blue collars of varying shades. With the redesign in 2014, Coconut was explicitly identified as female again.
  • Pepper, Chocolate Chip, and Meatloaf are the only pets that were explicitly identified by AG as males.
