[edit] Chapter One: Changes for Christmas

Julie and her sister Tracy are in a Christmas Tree lot in San Francisco. As Julie is walking through the tiny forrest she is imagining being with her grandparents for the holidays like the years before. While lost in her thoughts Julie hears someone calling her name. It is Hank a friend from Julie's neighborhood who is in charge of the the tree lot. He asks the girls if they are his first customers but the girls glumly tell him no. Julie and Tracy take turns telling Hank how this Christmas will be different because their parents are not together and money is tight so they wont have a tree at their Mother's house. The girls also tell Hank that they will be spending Christmas at their Dad's house this years instead of together as a family like in the past. Hank suggets to the girls that they adopt a tree for the holidays. He has bought the tree to help brighten up the Veterans' Center but has not had time to plant it. The girls agree to adopt the tree and take it home to decorate it with their mother. The girls put the tree up in the window of their apartment and decide to decorate it before their mother comes home. However as they argue over where the decorations are mom comes up and asks the girls to help her in the shop. They agree and plan to decorate after dinner.
