Changes and Added Transitions[]

  • Kit Saves the Day, Chapter One: Stuck(now Chapter Five) has several transitional paragraphs before the text. Aunt Millie has agreed to stay with the Kittredges all summer to Kit's delight. Charlie leaves in June to Montana to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps and Kit misses him; she writes him lots of newspapers to keep him posted while away and saves all his letters to read when she's too lonely. She can tell everyone in her family misses him and even Grace is a little mopey with him gone. It is a hot sticky, boring August afternoon and Kit finds a letter from him, she whoops with joy (minus her "Yahoo!" in the original book.)
  • Changes for Kit Something Wonderful (now Chapter Nine) has several transitional paragraphs before the text. Kit's family continues to hear from Will Shepherd after his departure; postcards arrive from different locations across the west such as California, Oregon, and Oklahoma. The scrawled sentences sound happy, but Kit is sure his travels are far from pleasant after her experiences in the hobo jungle and her memories of the poorer children. She, Ruthie, and Stirling, take food to them often and as winter sets in, she is determined to find what to do to help. Charlie returns from his CCC job. Dad comes home with the best news of all--a job. It is only a part-time job at the airport and does not pay much but it's a job he can count on. The boarders are still needed and pennies must be pinched. but her parents look less worried and smile more often. The text also states that it is February, Kit's coat is too small to button shut, and that she, Stirling, and Ruthie are walking home together. As well, previously included details about who the boarders are and the family's many financial struggles before now, and Kit's experience in the hobo jungle and the children from the summer are removed, as it has already been explained and is contained in the book.
  • Chapter Two, To Do (now Chapter Ten) explains more about why Mr and Mrs. Bell have moved out; about a month ago, Mr. Bell found a new job.
